This Mexican fruit salad recipe is refreshing, and bursting with juicy and sweet fruits that will make your taste buds salsa dance! Tropical fruits paired with citrus, strawberries, and grapes in a light honey-lime Tajin dressing.

Whether you are planning for Cinco de Mayo, just love Mexican food, or want to highlight summer fruit, this simple Mexican fruit salad is the perfect addition to your summer months.

Lighter and different than a creamy fruit salad or the popular bionico salad sold by street vendors in Jalisco, Mexico. This fresh fruit salad does not have a sweet cream sauce but instead is dressed in light, honey-lime sauce with a touch of chile-lime salt.

Why You Will Love This Mexican Fruit Salad Recipe

  • Fresh Fruit– Refresh your body with this fantastic fruit salad with only the freshest ingredients.
  • Fruit Salad with a Twist –When you’re craving something out-of-the-ordinary, make this unique take on the typical fruit salad, seasoned with Mexican spices and lots of lime!
  • Versatile Use–Serve this delicious fruit salad as a side dish, snack, appetizer, finger food for game night, or a healthier dessert alternative!

Simple Ingredients

  • Mango| Choose a ripe mango and have it peeled and diced for the salad.
  • Orange| Peeled and chopped oranges, try and get all the white pith off.
  • Pineapple| There’s no need for a massive pineapple. So, go ahead and choose a small one and have it diced for the recipe. If easier, buy a container of diced pineapple instead.
  • Strawberries| Toss in some sweet sliced strawberries.
  • Grapes| One cup of seedless grapes will do the trick!
  • Limes| About four to six limes will produce the right amount of juice for the fruit salad. Freshly squeezed is best (my favorite citrus press). Remember to gently roll the limes on the counter before juicing.
  • Honey| Just a couple of spoonfuls of honey adds the perfect sugary sweetness to your fruit salad.
  • Cinnamon| Sprinkle in some ground cinnamon for a grounding and cozy spice.
  • Tajin seasoning| Tajin seasoning is found with spices in your grocery store or near the produce section. It is an all-natural, sugar-free, gluten-free chili powder, lime, and salt blend. If you don’t have it, you can substitute it with chili powder or another chili lime seasoning. Check out a variety of ways to use it below.
  • Mint| Finally, garnish the fruit salad with refreshing mint leaves, if desired. Don’t leave this herb out, it really adds vibrant flavor and zest.

Storage Tips

Refrigerate– If you’re making this recipe ahead of time or have some yummy leftovers, you can store it in the refrigerator for three to five days in an airtight container. This recipe is even tastier when it has some time to sit! However, after about 24 hours in the fridge, the fruit will begin releasing a little more juice than you’d like, compromising the texture and flavor.

How to Freeze Fruit Salad– Place leftover Mexican fruit salad in a freezer-safe bag or container and place it in the freezer. The honey dressing will help the dish preserve better than if it was fruit alone, but it shouldn’t be left in the freezer for longer than eight weeks for the best results. Let it thaw overnight in the fridge before serving it again. Remember that the texture will likely be a little soggy or mushy compared to when you serve this recipe freshly made. Or even better, enjoy it frozen by using it in a smoothie!

Frequently Asked Questions

What fruits are typically included in a Mexican fruit salad?

Mexican fruit salads typically include a variety of colorful and juicy fruits such as mango, pineapple, papaya, watermelon, cantaloupe, and sometimes even jicama – a must-try!

Is Tajín seasoning necessary for a Mexican fruit salad?

While Tajín seasoning is a popular addition to Mexican fruit salads, it is not necessary. You can still make a delicious fruit salad using just fresh fruits and lime juice or use chili powder as a substitute.

Can I make a Mexican fruit salad ahead of time?

Yes! It tastes even better when the flavors have had time to meld together. Make it a few hours ahead and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. However, I wouldn’t recommend days in advance as the fruit releases more of its juice and loses its texture as time goes on.

Is Mexican fruit salad a healthy dessert option?

Yes! Mexican fruit salad is not only healthy but also a refreshing dessert option. Be careful not to add too much honey to your fruit salad. The more traditionalbionico fruit salad has sour cream, Mexican Crema or Greek yogurt and sweetened condensed milk. Nothing wrong with that, but this version is much lighter.

Notes

  • Fresh is best! Juice limes for the best flavor. The number of limes will vary depending on their size of them and how juicy they are.
  • Get the most out of your limes – roll the limes on a flat surface, using the palm of your hand. This loosens things up and will help get the most juice out of it.
  • Tajin seasoning is found with spices or in the produce section with minced garlic in your grocery store. It is an all-natural, sugar-free, gluten-free blend of chili powder, lime, and salt. If you don’t have it, you can substitute chili powder. If you do purchase it for this recipe, you can also use it in any Mexican dish to add flavor.
  • For a variation, add or substitute any of the following fruits:
    • Try papaya, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, or, if you’re feeling exotic, toss in some dragonfruit!
    • Add your favorite berries; blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, pitted cherries.

    • Add some sliced bananas, and dip them in a little lime or lemon juice before adding so they won’t turn brown.
    • I personally love crunchy jicama and cucumber is delicious too!!
    • Get creative with toppings: you can add some extra texture and flavor to your salad by adding toasted coconut, chopped nuts, or even a drizzle of honey.
    • A citrus press is a great tool for juicing your limes.
