Warning: major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4.

Summary

  • The Umbrella Academy season 4 ended with the Hargreeves fixing the main timeline at a high price, sacrificing themselves.
  • Characters like the Swedes, Hazel, Agnes, Grace, Herb, Dot, and The Handler returned in the show's final scene in a new and different reality.
  • The final scene of The Umbrella Academy shows how differnet the world is without the Hargreeves.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 ended on a heartbreaking yet hopeful note as the Hargreeves were able to fix the main timeline at a high price, and many characters returned in the show’s final scene. The Umbrella Academy has now ended with its fourth season, but not without a series of twists and shocking reveals. Set six years after the ending of season 3, The Umbrella Academy season 4 reunited with the Hargreeves, who had parted ways to live normal lives but were brought together by a mysterious rescue mission.

Said mission led the Hargreeves to some disturbing reveals about their origins, Ben's (Justin H. Min) death, and the nature of all the apocalypses they had faced. With the help of his variants, Five (Aidan Gallagher) learned the marigolds in them shattered the timeline and they were doomed to end the world countless times across the multiverse unless they merged with a destructive event called “The Cleanse”. This event was triggered by a marigold (in this case Ben) coming into contact with the durango particle, hosted by Jennifer (Victoria Sawal).

The final scene of The Umbrella Academy saw characters from past seasons living normal and very different lives

The Hargreeves realized that sacrificing themselves was the only way to fix the main timeline and save the universe, but doing so not only meant dying, but being entirely erased from history. At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 4, the Hargreeves’ sacrifice was successful and the main timeline was fixed, but history was reset as well. The final scene of The Umbrella Academy saw characters from past seasons living normal and very different lives in the main timeline, as they no longer have to deal with Reginald, the Hargreeves, and the multiverse.

5 The Swedes

The Swedes Were Antagonists In The Umbrella Academy Season 2

The Commission hired a team of triplet assassins simply known as The Swedes.

In the first two seasons of The Umbrella Academy, the Hargreeves dealt with The Commission, as they were going after Five (Aidan Gallagher), who worked for them for years and left in the middle of the John F. Kennedy mission to return to his siblings. After they escaped from the apocalypse in season 1, the Hargreeves were scattered through the early 1960s in Dallas, Texas, but that didn’t stop The Commission from continuing to hunt the Five and now his siblings as well. For that, the Commission hired a team of triplet assassins simply known as The Swedes.

The team was formed by Axel (Kris Holden-Ried), Otto (Jason Bryden), and Oscar (Tom Sinclair), and all that’s known about their backstory is that they grew up on a farm in Sweden. The Swedes made their first appearance at the beginning of The Umbrella Academy season 2 when Hazel took Five to ten days before the 1963 apocalypse. The Swedes shot at Hazel and Five, killing the former while Five escaped. The Swedes were hired to kill Five and his siblings, but they were being manipulated by The Handler.

After Oscar and Otto were killed, Axel discovered The Handler’s lies and went after her to avenge his brothers. Axel killed the Handler, and when Five rewound time, he killed her again, but agreed with Five to stop fighting and left. His final appearance in The Umbrella Academy season 2 was when Klaus’ Destiny’s Children picked him up from the road. In the final scene of The Umbrella Academy, Axel, Otto, and Oscar are seen alive and well, playing frisbee together in the park.

4 Hazel & Agnes

Hazel & Agnes Finally Got Their Happy Ending

In The Umbrella Academy season 1, The Commission sent agents Cha Cha (Mary J. Blige) and Hazel (Cameron Britton) to prevent Five from stopping the apocalypse. Of course, Five was a lot quicker and smarter and managed to escape from them, but Cha Cha got more and more ruthless and violent. Hazel, on the other hand, found something more important to focus on. Hazel met Agnes Rofa (Sheila McCarthy), the owner of Griddy’s Doughnuts, where the Commission first fought Five in the season 1 timeline.

Hazel and Agnes fell in love with each other, while Hazel also grew disillusioned with his job.

Agnes was the owner, baker, and waitress at Griddy’s and dreamed of saving enough money to quit, move to the countryside, and have her own vegetable garden and bakery. Hazel and Agnes met when he had donuts and coffee at Griddy’s and they started talking. Hazel and Agnes fell in love with each other, while Hazel also grew disillusioned with his job. Knowing that the apocalypse was coming, Hazel convinced Agnes to run away with him and live her dream, but he had to escape from Cha Cha first, who was ordered to kill him – and he was ordered to kill her.

After saving Agnes from Cha Cha and The Handler (and shooting the latter in the head), Hazel and Agnes used his briefcase to escape from the apocalypse. At the beginning of The Umbrella Academy season 2, Hazel returned to help Five and revealed he and Agnes spent 20 years together before she died of cancer. As mentioned above, Hazel was killed by the Swedes in 1963, but he and Agnes are alive and well in the fixed main timeline. At the end of The Umbrella Academy season 4, Agnes and Hazel are seen at the park with their bikes, and Hazel greets another returning character.

3 Grace

Grace Is Now A Real Mother

Grace was a robot built by Reginald who served as the Hargreeves’ caregiver and mother figure.

The Hargreeves were raised and trained by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) and didn’t have a mother – but they had Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins). Grace was a robot built by Reginald who served as the Hargreeves’ caregiver and mother figure. Grace was modeled on Reginald’s sentimental partner from the 1960s, who also worked with him. Robot Grace made her first appearance in season 1 and human Grace debuted in season 2, with Diego (David Castañeda) recognizing her. It was Diego who told Grace that Reginald was planning to kill JFK, leading her to investigate and discover some mysterious photos Reginald had been hiding.

Umbrella Academy: Why Reginald Is Such A Bad Father

The Umbrella Academy was created by Reginald Hargreeves, who isn't exactly known for being a good father – but why is he so terrible?

Grace broke up with Reginald, and he built robot Grace years later to look after his Sparrow Academy children. In a flashback in The Umbrella Academy season 1, it was revealed Reginald built Grace as the perfect housewife and mother to the children after Viktor (Elliot Page) killed many nannies with his powers. The Hargreeves were very fond of robot Grace, especially Diego and Viktor. Robot Grace died when the mansion collapsed at the start of the apocalypse in season 1, and the season 3 version was killed by Five when she attacked them when they were trapping the Kugelblitz (which she worshipped) inside Christopher.

As The Umbrella Academy season 4 is set in the timeline Reginald designed and he brought his wife, Abigail, back to life, Grace was nowhere to be found – nor her human version or a robot modeled on her. However, she makes a brief appearance in the show’s final scene, in the main timeline. Grace is the woman Hazel greets at the park, and she’s seen with a stroller and interacting with her baby, showing that, in the main timeline, Grace is a real mother.

2 The Handler

The Handler Is Now Living A Normal Life

The Handler was a firm believer in The Commission’s mission and would go to lengths to ensure that things happened as they should.

One of the biggest antagonists throughout The Umbrella Academy, especially in its first two seasons, was The Handler (Kate Walsh). The Handler was a high ranking member of The Commission and the one who found old Five in the post-apocalyptic future. The Handler recruited Five and sent him on different missions (including the JFK one) before he returned to his siblings. The Handler was a firm believer in The Commission’s mission and would go to lengths to ensure that things happened as they should, even if that meant betraying many people.

The Handler forged her superior’s signature to authorize the murder of Lila’s (Ritu Arya) parents, who she adopted and trained as her operative, taking advantage of her unique powers. The Handler tasked Cha Cha and Hazel with killing Five and later the Swedes with killing the Hargreeves, and though Hazel shot her in the head in season 1, she survived thanks to a metal plate on her head. In season 2, after being demoted, she tried to take over The Commission and killed Lila and the Hargreeves before Five rewound time.

Five was able to save Lila and his siblings, but the Handler was killed again by Axel, and this time for good. The Handler didn’t return in The Umbrella Academy seasons 3 and 4, but she was brought back for the show’s final scene. At the park in the main timeline, the Handler is stretching on the bench next to Grace. The Handler is talking on the phone and smiling, showing that she’s a completely different person in a world where the Hargreeves never existed.

Cellphones were notably absent in the 2019 timelines throughout The Umbrella Academy, but they exist in the fixed main timeline.

1 Herb & Dot

Herb No Longer Has To Work For The Commission

Both Herb and Dot made their debut in The Umbrella Academy season 2, and they worked for The Commission, though in different roles.

A surprise appearance in The Umbrella Academy’s final scene is Herb (Ken Hall) and Dot (Patrice Goodman). Both Herb and Dot made their debut in The Umbrella Academy season 2, and they worked for The Commission, though in different roles. Herb specialized in analytics, and in season 2, he showed Diego the Infinite Switchboard so he could see how changes to the timeline would trigger a nuclear apocalypse in 1963. Herb also gave Diego a briefcase they had salvaged so he could escape from the Commission. After the Handler’s coup and when she left to kill the Hargreeves, Herb was voted temporary Chair of the Commission.

Herb took over the Commission after the Handler’s death, and he helped the Hargreeves return to their own time, though they ended up in another timeline. Unfortunately, Herb’s time as the leader of the Commission didn’t last long, and in season 3, Five found a recording in the destroyed headquarters where Herb said it was the end before he was sucked up by the Kugelblitz. Dot used to work with Five and was in charge of the file on the apocalypse, and sat behind Five in the office.

Dot teamed up with Herb and others when the Handler tried to take over, and continued to work with Herb until the Commission’s end. Herb and Dot return in The Umbrella Academy’s final scene, and they are shown in front of the tree where the eight golden flowers appear. Herb and Dot are talking and playing backgammon while another man draws a sketch of them.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book of the same name created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The Hargreeves — collectively known as The Umbrella Academy — were born with superpowers, and their adoptive father utilized their abilities. However, as they grew older, the siblings grew apart as they dealt with their trauma. They are brought back together after their father dies and Five returns from the future with grave news: The world will end, and The Umbrella Academy has to stop it before it happens.
